Security forces break up Luxor railway sit-in

Security forces broke up a sit-in by temporary railway sanitation workers after their protest blocked tracks since Sunday, arresting eight of them.

The sit-in completely halted rail traffic and delayed 11 trains going between Aswan and Cairo or Alexandria.

The workers demanded permanent employment and a direct contract with the Railway Authority. Over 400 workers protested, 150 of whom were security guards while the rest were janitors.

Prosecutors have pledged to investigate the sit-in and determine the protest leader.

The train halt was the third one Sunday. Earlier, residents of Nag Hammadi and Beni Suef stopped trains to protest diesel shortages.
